How Owning Cattle Actually Works
It is a genuinely unusual thing to buy, so here is the whole of it: what you get on day one, what happens each year, what you pay and when, and when beef actually reaches your table.
The Short Version
You buy a bred mama cow that lives at Vincent Farms in East Texas. The ranch raises her and every calf she has. The calves are yours too, so the herd you own grows each year. You decide which animals stay in the herd and which go to the processor for your family's beef.

What the First Three Years Look Like
Starting with a single bred cow. Timings move with the animal and the season, and the ranch will give you the real dates for your own cattle as they happen.
Day one
You buy a bred mama cow
You choose your animal at Vincent Farms, the working ranch in East Texas where your cattle will live. She is already bred when you buy her, so her first calf is on the way before she is even yours.

Around month four
Your first calf is born
The ranch sends photos. The calf belongs to you from the moment it hits the ground, and you can name it if you want. Plenty of owners do.

Around month ten
The calf is weaned and your cow is bred back
Weaning runs five to seven months. Once the calf is independent, Vincent Farms breeds your cow back, so the next one is already on the way while the first is still growing.

Year two
A heifer joins your herd, a steer grows out
A female calf stays and becomes a mama cow of her own in time. A male calf grows out on grass toward harvest weight. Either way your herd is bigger than the one you bought.

Year three
Beef reaches your table
Your first steer finishes on grass at roughly two years old. You arrange processing with a facility Vincent Farms works with, then collect your beef. Meanwhile your mama cow keeps calving.

Why It Compounds
One Cow Does Not Stay One Cow
This is the part that makes ownership different from any other way of buying food. A freezer empties. A herd calves. Every year your cows are on that pasture, there are more animals in your name than there were the year before.

What You Pay
Every Cost, In One Place
Everything you would pay, and when. No surprises later, and nothing hidden in the small print.
- Your cattle
- $6,500 each for one or two bred mama cows, $6,000 each for three to nine. Ten or more is a conversation. Paid once, when you buy her.
- First year of care
- Included in the purchase price, covering your cow and her calf through weaning, typically five to seven months.
- Care after year one
- $1,500 per head per year, covering her keep on the ranch. Brood cow insurance is included in that.
- Processing
- Billed by the processing facility, only when you decide to harvest an animal. Fees vary by region and facility, so there is no flat number we can honestly quote you.
- Getting your beef home
- Free to collect at the processor within the pickup window. Shipping or delivery is arranged at your cost if you would rather not drive.

Who is OwnYourHerd, and how do you fit in with the ranch?
OwnYourHerd is the group that finds and vets the ranches, introduces families to them, and stays involved for the life of the arrangement. Vincent Farms is the working ranch in East Texas where your cattle actually live and are cared for. The two of us work closely together on every ownership arrangement, so you are never handed off and left to figure it out.
Who will I actually talk to?
Your first call is with the OwnYourHerd team. We walk through how ownership works, what it costs and whether it genuinely fits your family, with no pressure either way. As you get further into the process you will also speak with Vincent Farms directly, because you should know the people raising your cattle before you commit to anything.
Do I need land, equipment or any experience?
None of the three. Your cattle live on pasture at Vincent Farms, and the ranch handles daily care, grazing, health and breeding. You own the animals. They do the work.
What if I want beef sooner than year three?
Then ownership is probably not the right starting point, and we would rather say so. Vincent Farms also sells half and whole beef shares from the same pasture and the same standards, which get food to your table far sooner. Plenty of families start there and move into ownership later.
Who decides when an animal is harvested?
You do. They are your animals. Vincent Farms will tell you when one is finished and ready, and recommend processors they work with, but the call is yours, including the choice to keep her and grow your herd instead.
What if my cow does not breed, or something happens to her?
Vincent Farms manages breeding as part of her care, and an open cow gets bred back. Every brood cow is insured, and that insurance is included in her maintenance fees, so if a brood cow dies she is replaced. Insurance on other animals is available at the owner’s option.
Can I visit my cattle?
Yes, and we would rather you did. Vincent Farms welcomes owner visits, arranged directly with the ranch. Many owners come out once a season to walk the pasture and put hands on their animals.
Can I sell my cattle if my situation changes?
Yes. You own the animal outright, so you decide. Sell at the local sale barn through the ranch, sell to another family on the OwnYourHerd waitlist, or keep her and let the herd grow. You are never stuck.
Is this an investment product?
No. You are buying livestock, which is your property, the same way a truck or a tractor would be. OwnYourHerd does not sell securities or investment contracts, does not guarantee returns, beef yields or resale values, and does not take a position in your animals.
How is this different from a meat subscription?
A subscription sends you cuts from animals a company owns. Here you own live animals on a named ranch, they produce calves that are also yours, and you can drive out and see them. Nothing arrives monthly because nothing is being shipped to you: it is being raised for you.
